In this article, we will provide a brief overview of the history and legality of chiropractors prescribing medications. We will also discuss how chiropractic care can benefit patients who are struggling with pain management or addiction.
The first chiropractic school was founded in 1906. For the first 20 years, there were many disagreements about whether or not this emerging profession should focus on traditional spinal manipulation and physical therapy, or if they could offer more services such as prescribing drugs for other conditions like allergies and arthritis.
It wasn’t until 1928 that a group of chiropractors created a professional organization focused solely on adjusting spine alignment to relieve patients’ pain without recommending any additional treatments.
In 1971, the Council on Chiropractic Education became affiliated with the American Medical Association (AMA).
This led to an agreement between these two groups:
“Chiropractors would agree never to use their skills beyond manipulating back muscles.”
