I’d like to add a little more background to this article. In a small rural town in New Hampshire, I recently started my career as a health care assistant and have been working in the field for the past three years. I am one of the few women working in a field that is still dominated by men. While I am not a trained physician, I have been asked to help patients with a variety of different medical conditions.
My main job is to assist patients who have been given the wrong drug, or are not getting the right dosage. I have also assisted patients who have been prescribed a lethal dose of a drug. Usually, if a patient is in immediate danger, I will immediately order the administration of an antidote to put the patient back alive.
I am probably one of the most hated people in my field. It is the job of my fellow doctors to try and get me fired. Even worse, it is the job of my patients to find me. They keep saying things like, “I don’t want to die in here. It’s not safe.” I can’t figure out why they say this. Maybe they don’t want to die in my hospital.
One of the things that makes a good pharmacist really useful is knowing what the patient is taking. It’s the only thing that can be taught. Being able to practice taking medication is a matter of being trained. You can’t just practice taking a medication and then have it administered to you. The only way to practice was through a class of medics. I know a lot of people who have been prescribed a medicine.
